Best salon, spa and barbershop answering service (2026): prices compared

The short answer

The best salon answering service books into the software you already use, or at least gets every request to you. Posh has live receptionists from $130 a month for 50 minutes; Abby Connect from $164, with Mindbody and Square Appointments shown; Smith.ai’s software schedules through Calendly from $150 for 75 calls, or free for 25. CoveDesk answers and texts you, but doesn’t book yet.

A salon answering service picks up when every chair is busy. It books or takes appointment requests, handles reschedules and late arrivals by your policy, answers price and service questions from your list, and gets anything unusual to you the same day.

CoveDesk for salons, spas and barbershops

A trained voice assistant, set up and run by our team, answers when every chair is full. It asks which service, with whom and when, and texts your front desk the request with the caller’s number, so you can book it in your own software. Running late, a reschedule or a price question gets your policy and your price list, word for word. A problem after a treatment gets the 911 line first, then rings through to you. What our answering service includes.

CoveDesk Front Desk is $249 a month with 250 minutes included, then $0.35 a minute. Free 14-day pilot, and no setup fee. See everything it includes

How to sort salon, spa and barbershop calls

How to sort salon, spa and barbershop calls
What the caller saysWhat to askWhat should happen
Wants to book“Which service, with anyone in particular? What day and time? First visit?”Book it if the service can, or text the request with two times that work.
Reschedule or cancel“Which appointment, and when would suit instead?”Your policy, word for word, including any late-cancel fee. Then text the front desk.
Running late“About how late?”Text the front desk at once, so the stylist can plan. Your rule on how late is too late.
How much is a cut, color or facial?“Which service, and is it your first time with us?”Prices from your list, as “starting at” where yours are. Color corrections and extensions: “That needs a consultation.”
Walk-in, or the wait at a barbershop“How many of you, and for which service?”Your walk-in rule. Nobody guesses a wait they can’t see.
Unhappy with a service“I’m sorry. What happened, and when was your visit?”Text the owner the same day. No refund or redo promised on the phone unless you’ve set a rule.
Wants to leave a card numberNothing.“We don’t take card details in a phone message. You can pay through our booking link or at your visit.”
A problem after a treatment: swelling, trouble breathingNothing further.“Please call 911 now.” Then tell you.

A phone service doesn’t replace emergency services. Anything that sounds like a health problem after a treatment gets “please call 911 or your doctor,” never advice from a script.

Your booking software decides most of this

Most salons and spas book in a tool such as Vagaro, Boulevard, Mindbody, Square Appointments, GlossGenius or Fresha. Whoever answers does one of three things with it:

  • Books into it on the call. Best for the client, but check the service names your tool, not just “calendars”. Abby Connect shows Mindbody and Square Appointments, Posh’s salon page names Acuity, Setmore, Calendly and Google Calendar.
  • Texts a booking link. Some software services do this on their cheapest plans. Ask whether it sends the link for the stylist the client asked for.
  • Takes the request. Your front desk calls back and books. Fine if you call back within the hour.

Deposits and no-show fees belong in your booking tool, not a phone message.

What to give whoever answers

  • Your service menu, with times, “starting at” prices, and which services need a consultation first
  • Who does what: which stylists do color, extensions or men’s cuts, and who’s off which days
  • Your policies, word for word: cancellation window, late arrivals, deposits, children in the salon

When the salon phone gets busy

Saturdays, the week before a holiday, and prom and wedding season bring the most calls when every chair is full. Barbershops get a lunchtime rush. Decide what callers hear about the next opening, and whether a waitlist takes their number.

What moves the bill for salons, spas and barbershops

Booking calls are short, but a busy salon gets a lot of them, and a per-minute plan charges for each. Per-call or per-customer billing can come out cheaper for short calls, and per-minute for long consultations.

What to look for in an answering service for salons, spas and barbershops

  • Your booking software by name, in writing, and whether it books, sends a link or only takes a request
  • Your policies read back exactly, including the cancellation fee
  • Spanish, if your clients speak it, and the hours it’s covered
  • A test: ask to move a color appointment to Saturday with another stylist.

The rest is on our guide to choosing an answering service.

Where CoveDesk fits, and where it doesn’t

CoveDesk answers every call in your salon’s name and texts the request to your front desk. It isn’t a live receptionist and doesn’t book into any booking tool yet, so if booking on the call matters most, choose a service that does. What CoveDesk doesn’t do yet. No calendar booking yet. Job software integrations: none yet. Free 14-day pilot, and you can start with just your after-hours calls.

Common questions

How much does an answering service for salons, spas and barbershops cost?
Published entry prices for the services on this page are $130 to $164 a month for services with live receptionists, as listed on November 5, 2026, before extra use.
Is an answering service worth it for a salon?
Count the calls that went unanswered on your busiest day and how many were bookings. A missed booking is an empty chair, and a new client who books elsewhere may not come back. If most clients book online already, a text back to missed calls with your booking link may be enough.
Do barbershops need an answering service?
A walk-in shop may only need its hours, wait policy and booking link given out, which a text back can do. A shop that books by appointment loses bookings to a ringing phone the same way a salon does.
Is CoveDesk a live receptionist service?
No. CoveDesk is a trained voice assistant, set up and run by our team. Callers hear a short notice first. If you want a person on every call, choose a live service.
