Best answering service for a small trade business: an honest comparison

The short answer

The best answering service for a small business depends on who you want answering and how many calls you get. Live receptionist services such as Ruby, PATLive, MAP Communications and AnswerConnect cost more per minute; software voice assistants such as Dialzara, Rosie and Goodcall cost less and pick up instantly. Compare plans at your own call volume, not the headline price.

There isn’t one best answering service, only the best fit for how your phones work. This guide compares the services owner-run trade businesses look at most, using each company’s own published prices.

Updated October 27, 2026. CoveDesk is one of the services on this page; other companies’ prices and features are from their own websites, linked below.

How to choose

  1. Live or software. Live receptionists cost more per minute; software voice assistants cost less and pick up instantly. Some services offer both. Call each one’s demo line and listen.
  2. How usage is counted. Per minute, per call or per caller. A business with short calls does better per minute; long calls do better per call.
  3. Your real volume. Count a month of calls from your phone log, and the average length. Run them through the cost calculator.
  4. What happens to urgent calls. A transfer to your cell, a text, or a message for the morning.
  5. Extras that cost extra. Setup fees, scheduling, Spanish, transfers and holiday hours.
  6. How easy it is to leave. Month to month, or a contract.

Common questions

Is an answering service worth it?
It is when the jobs it catches are worth more than it costs. Multiply the share of missed callers who would have booked by your average job to get what one missed call is worth, then compare a month of missed calls with the plan’s price. For a trade business that misses even a few calls a week from customers ready to book, it usually is; for a business whose callers happily leave a message, it may not be.
What’s the cheapest answering service?
Among the services compared here, the lowest published entry prices are software voice assistant plans, some under $50 a month for a small number of minutes or calls. The cheapest at your volume depends on how many calls you get and how long they last.
Why isn’t my favorite service listed?
We compared services that owner-run trade businesses search for most and that publish prices. If one’s missing or a price has changed, tell us and we’ll check it.
Are these prices current?
They were copied from each company’s own pricing page on October 27, 2026, with a link to the page. Prices change, so check the company’s site before you buy.
Is CoveDesk a live receptionist service?
No. CoveDesk is a phone answering service: a trained voice assistant, set up and run by our team, that picks up in your business’s name at any hour. Callers hear a short notice at the start of the call about how it’s handled. Urgent calls are put through to you, and you get the details by text. If a live person on every call matters most to you, choose one of the live services on this page.
