Answering service for contractors and home service trades

The short answer

A contractor answering service picks up your business calls while you’re on a job site. It takes the caller’s name, number, address and what they need, books estimate visits or callbacks, puts true emergencies through to you, and sends you the details, so estimate requests don’t go to the next company on the list.

When you’re on a roof, in a trench or under a truck, the phone keeps ringing. Here’s how contractors and home service trades cover their calls, what answering services charge, and how the needs differ by trade.

Updated October 27, 2026. CoveDesk is one of the services on this page; other companies’ prices and features are from their own websites, linked below.

What contractor callers need

Most calls to contractors are one of these:

  • A quote or an estimate visit
  • Scheduling or rescheduling a job
  • A question about a job in progress
  • A repair that can’t wait
  • Vendors, inspectors and other contractors

Some can’t wait for a callback the next morning:

  • Well and pump: no water in the house
  • Septic: a backup into the house or a high-water alarm
  • Garage door: a door stuck open overnight, or a car trapped inside
  • Water damage: water still coming in, or standing water
  • Any trade: a safety problem on a job you’re running

Estimate requests are where answering pays off most for contractors: a caller who wants a quote usually calls two or three companies, and the first one to call back often gets the visit.

How much does an answering service for contractors cost?

Published entry plans for the services on this page are $79 to $99 a month for software voice assistants and $99 to $350 a month for live receptionist services, before extra minutes or calls (as listed on October 27, 2026). Plans with more minutes cost more. CoveDesk Front Desk is $249/mo with 250 minutes included, and CoveDesk Text-Back, which texts back the calls you miss, is $99/mo.

Most charge a monthly fee with minutes or calls included, then a rate for each extra one, so a busy month costs more. Put your own call count into the answering service cost calculator to see a monthly bill.

What to look for in an answering service for contractors

  • 24/7 coverage: nights, weekends and holidays answered, not sent to voicemail. Ask whether those hours cost extra.
  • Emergency routing: clear rules for urgent contractor calls, like no water, a septic backup, a door stuck open or water coming in, and a live transfer or a text to whoever is on call.
  • Your questions, your order: they ask what you need to quote and schedule, and change the script when you ask.
  • The details right away: a text after every call, with a recording or a transcript.
  • Pricing that fits your volume: the monthly fee, the minutes or calls included, and the price of extras, at your real call count. Try the answering service cost calculator.
  • Who picks up: live receptionists, a software voice assistant, or a mix. Ask for a demo call, and try one after hours too.
  • Your software: if you use Jobber, Housecall Pro or ServiceTitan, whether they book into it, and what that costs.
  • Spam and wrong numbers: whether those calls count against your minutes.
  • Your number, easy to leave: forwarding from the number you already have, and month-to-month or short terms.

What a good answering service asks your contractor callers

Whoever answers, these are the details you’ll want before you call back:

  • Name, callback number and the job address
  • New job, existing job, or a vendor or inspector
  • What they need and how soon
  • For quotes: rough size of the job, timeline and how they found you
  • For urgent calls: is anyone at risk, and is the problem getting worse?
  • Best time to call back

Write your list down before you talk to any service. A good one will set up the call around it, not the other way round.

Common questions

How much does an answering service for contractors cost?
Published entry plans for the services compared on this page are $79 to $99 a month for software voice assistants and $99 to $350 a month for live receptionist services, as listed on October 27, 2026, before extra minutes or calls. Bigger plans cost more. The cost calculator shows what your own call volume would cost.
What’s the cheapest way for a contractor to stop missing calls?
A text back to every missed call is usually the cheapest step: the caller hears from your business right away and can reply with what they need. An answering service costs more but picks up the call itself, which matters more when you get urgent or after-hours calls.
Do answering services work for septic, well and pump, or garage door companies?
Yes. The main thing is telling the service which calls are urgent in your trade (no water, a backup, a door stuck open) and what to do with them. Services with a contractors or home services page are used to these calls.
Do I have to change my phone number?
Usually not. Most answering services, CoveDesk included, work with the number you already have: you forward calls to them when you don’t pick up, or all the time. Ask each service how forwarding works with your phone company.
Is CoveDesk a live receptionist service?
No. CoveDesk is a phone answering service: a trained voice assistant, set up and run by our team, that picks up in your business’s name at any hour. Callers hear a short notice at the start of the call about how it’s handled. Urgent calls are put through to you, and you get the details by text. If having a live person on every call matters most to you, a live service like the ones above is the better fit.
Should an answering service give prices on the phone?
Only the prices you approve, like a service call fee. Most contractors have the service collect the details and leave quoting to them.
Is an answering service worth it?
It is when the jobs it catches are worth more than it costs. Multiply the share of missed callers who would have booked by your average job to get what one missed call is worth, then compare a month of missed calls with the plan’s price. The missed call calculator does the math. Our guide to whether an answering service is worth it covers when it isn’t.
