Missed call calculator: what are unanswered calls costing you?

The short answer

A missed call is worth your booking rate times your average job. If 4 in 10 missed callers would have booked and your average job is $350, each missed call is worth about $140 in first-job revenue; 40 missed calls a month is about $5,600. Enter your own numbers below to see a month and a year.

Every call you can’t pick up is a customer who may call someone else. Enter your own numbers to see what missed calls may be worth to your business in a month and a year.

An estimate from your own numbers, not a promise. It counts only the first job; a customer who comes back or refers a neighbor is worth more.

How it works

The math is simple, and every number is yours:

  1. Calls a week × 52 ÷ 12 = calls a month.
  2. × the share nobody picks up = missed calls a month.
  3. × the share of those who would have booked = jobs missed.
  4. × your average job = what those calls may be worth.

Your phone’s call log has the first two numbers. For the share who would have booked, be honest: some callers are price shopping or calling about something you don’t do. Your books have the average job.

The result counts only the first job. A customer who comes back every year, or sends a neighbor, is worth more. Ways to stop missing them: a better voicemail and a missed-call text, or an answering service.

Common questions

How much is a missed call worth?
On average, your booking rate times your average job. If 4 in 10 missed callers would have booked and your average job is $350, each missed call is worth about $140 in first-job revenue.
How do I find how many calls I miss?
Your phone’s recent calls list or your phone company’s online account shows missed and unanswered calls. Count a typical week, not a holiday week.
Don’t missed callers just call back?
Some do. Many call the next business on the list, especially for urgent work. That’s what the “would have booked” number is for: use your best honest guess.
Is this a promise of what I’d earn with an answering service?
No. It’s an estimate from your own numbers of what missed calls may be worth, not a promise of what any service would win back.
