Which costs less: it depends on how long your calls run

Ruby’s smallest plan works out to $5.00 a minute. Smith.ai’s smallest live plan works out to $10.00 a call. So a two-minute call costs about the same at either. Shorter calls favor Ruby, and longer ones favor Smith.ai. Ruby rounding each call up to the minute, and billing hold and after-call time, moves that point lower.

Common questions

Is Smith.ai cheaper than Ruby?
It depends on call length. Ruby’s smallest plan is $250 for 50 minutes, $5.00 a minute, and Smith.ai’s smallest live plan is $300 for 30 calls, $10.00 a call. They meet near two-minute calls: shorter favors Ruby, longer favors Smith.ai. Smith.ai’s software plans, from $150 for 75 calls, cost less than either.
Do Ruby and Smith.ai answer in Spanish?
Both do. Ruby includes Spanish at no extra cost, with bilingual service on weekdays from 8 AM to 9 PM Eastern. Smith.ai lists English and Spanish, and on live plans a dedicated Spanish line is $1.00 a call.
Which is better for a one-person HVAC or plumbing business?
Neither is cheap for one person. If you want a person on every call, compare Ruby with PATLive, which starts at $99 for 50 minutes. If software is fine, Smith.ai’s free plan covers 25 calls a month, and Rosie and Upfirst start lower still. Check how each handles a night emergency before you choose.
Can I cancel Ruby or Smith.ai any time?
Ruby renews every 30 days and ends at the close of the billing period you cancel in. Smith.ai is month to month: its live pricing page says billing runs through the current cycle, and its software page asks for 30 days’ notice.
Is CoveDesk a live receptionist service?
No. CoveDesk is a phone answering service: a trained voice assistant, set up and run by our team, that picks up in your business’s name at any hour. Callers hear a short notice at the start of the call about how it’s handled. Urgent calls are put through to you or whoever you have on call, and you get the details by text. If a live person on every call matters most to you, choose one of the live services on this page.
