How to get more Google reviews without breaking the rules
The short answer
To get more Google reviews, ask every happy customer soon after the job, and send a direct link or QR code so it takes one tap. Don’t offer anything in return: Google says free or discounted goods or services in exchange for reviews are strictly prohibited. Customers need a Google Account, and replying to the reviews you get shows you value them.
Most happy customers will leave a review if you make it easy and ask at the right moment. Here’s how to do that, and the one rule to be careful with.

How to ask
- Make your link. The review link generator gives you a direct link and a QR code.
- Ask at the right moment: right after the work, while they’re pleased.
- Ask in person first, then text the link so they don’t have to search.
- Make it a habit. Ask everyone, so you’re not only hearing from the very happy or very unhappy.
- Reply to every review, good and bad.

What to say
Keep it short and personal, like this: “Thanks for choosing us today, Dana. If you have a minute, a Google review really helps a small business like ours. Here’s the link.” The review request templates fill this in with your details.
The rules to stay within
Google says (opens in a new tab) reviews must reflect a genuine experience, and that offering incentives, like free or discounted goods or services, in exchange for posting, changing or removing reviews is strictly prohibited.
- No discounts, gift cards or raffles for reviews
- Don’t write reviews for yourself, or ask staff and family to
- Don’t buy reviews
- Ask for honest feedback, not only five stars
If you’re texting customers, only do so with their permission. In the US, the FTC also has rules on fake reviews, so ask your attorney if you’re unsure.
Keep it going without thinking about it
Asking only works when it happens every time. CoveDesk’s review requests send the ask for you after a job. See how it works.
