Review request text message templates

The short answer

Ask for a Google review right after the job, in person, then send a short text with a direct review link: thank them by name, say who you are, and ask if they’d share how it went. Send one reminder at most, ask every customer the same way, and never offer a discount or gift for a review.

The best time to ask for a review is right after the job, by text, with a link that opens the review box. Fill in your details and copy a ready-to-send message.

Subject: Thanks from [your business]

Hi, Thank you for choosing [your business]. We're a small local business, and reviews are how most of our new customers find us. If you have two minutes, would you share how it went on Google? [your review link] Thank you, [your name] [your business]

In person

What to say at the door

Before you leave the job. Then send the text so the link is on their phone.

"Thanks for having us. We're a small business and most of our work comes from people reading our Google reviews. Would it be OK if I texted you the link? It takes about a minute."

How it works

  1. Make your direct review link with the Google review link generator.
  2. Fill in your business, your name and the customer’s first name. The messages update as you type.
  3. Ask in person before you leave, then send the text within a few hours.
  4. If there’s no review after a few days, send one reminder. Then stop.

The texts use plain apostrophes and no emoji on purpose: one curly quote or emoji can make a phone split a text into several, and some phones show them as boxes. The character count shows how many texts each message takes.

What not to do

  • Don’t offer a discount, gift or entry into a drawing for a review. Google’s policies don’t allow it.
  • Don’t ask only the customers you expect to be happy. Ask everyone the same way.
  • Don’t write reviews for customers or post them yourself.
  • Only text customers who gave you their number for the job, and stop if they ask.

Common questions

When should I ask for a Google review?
Right after the job, while the customer is still happy you fixed it. Ask in person, then text the link within a few hours.
Is it OK to text customers asking for a review?
Texting a customer who gave you their number for the job, about that job, is common. Keep it to one request and one reminder, and stop if they ask. This isn’t legal advice.
How many times should I ask?
Once, plus one friendly reminder a few days later if they haven’t left one. More than that starts to annoy people.
What if a customer leaves a bad review?
Reply calmly and publicly, thank them, say what you’ll do, and offer to talk offline. Future customers read your replies too.
