How to create a Facebook business page, step by step

The short answer

To create a Facebook business page, log in to your personal Facebook account, choose Pages, then Create page. Pick a public Page, add your business name and category, then your contact details, location, hours and photos. Pages are free, and Facebook says you need a personal profile to make one. Once it’s live, you can post and answer messages from Meta Business Suite.

It’s free and takes less time than most people expect. The bits that cause trouble later are who has access and whether the details match your Google profile, so we cover those too.

The steps, on a computer

  1. Log in to Facebook with your personal profile.
  2. Choose Pages on the left, then Create page.
  3. Choose Public page, then Next and Get started.
  4. Add your Page name and category. A short bio is optional. Then choose Create Page.
  5. Add your contact details, location and hours.
  6. Add a profile photo and cover photo, and set your action button.
  7. Connect WhatsApp or skip it, choose whether to invite friends, and set your notifications.

These follow Facebook’s help page (opens in a new tab) as we read it. Facebook moves its menus around, so follow what you see if it’s changed.

  • Your name, written the same as on Google. People compare, and so should you. Use the exact version on your Google Business Profile.
  • A specific category. You can pick up to three, and Facebook suggests specific ones, such as “bakery” over “local business”.
  • A phone number that gets answered. People call from the Page, often when they’re ready to buy.
  • Your hours, kept up to date for holidays.
  • A photo of your real work or your team, not a stock picture.

Who should have access

Facebook now calls this Page access rather than roles. Anyone with full control has the same power as you, including removing you or deleting the Page. So keep full control to people you’d trust with the business, and give helpers partial or task access. A Page where nobody has full control gets deactivated, so make sure there’s always someone. Facebook’s page on access (opens in a new tab) explains each level.

If a past employee or marketer set up your Page, sort this out early. It’s much harder once that person has moved on.

Reviews and recommendations

You can turn reviews on or off (opens in a new tab) under your Page’s settings. Turning them off removes the rating and the reviews from the Page. A Page may have no rating until it has at least 5 reviews, and Facebook says it doesn’t verify that a reviewer bought anything. You can report a recommendation that breaks its standards, and Facebook may remove it.

For most local businesses, Google reviews do more work, so start there: see how to get Google reviews and the review link generator.

Running it without it taking over

Meta Business Suite (opens in a new tab) is free and lets you schedule posts and answer Facebook, Messenger and Instagram messages in one place. A photo of a finished job every week or two beats nothing at all, and a dead Page can look like a closed business. If you’d rather not keep it up, say so in your bio and point people to your phone and website.

Common questions

Is a Facebook business page free?
Yes. Facebook says Pages are free. Ads are optional and paid for separately.
Do I need a personal Facebook account?
Yes. Facebook says you need a personal profile to create a Page. You don’t need a separate account for the business.
Can I make a page from my phone?
Facebook’s app has Pages too, though its menus differ. We’ve only checked the computer steps above, so follow what the app shows you.
How do I add someone to my page?
You need full control and must be switched into the Page. Then go to the Page’s access settings and invite them. Give partial or task access unless they really need full control.
How do I delete or hide my page?
To hide it for now, unpublish it under Access and control in your Page’s settings. To delete it, you need full control. Facebook says the Page is deactivated right away and deleted for good after 14 days, and you can cancel within that time.
Do I still need a website if I have a Facebook page?
A Page helps, but you don’t own it, and not everyone’s on Facebook. For most businesses, a Google profile comes first and a simple website next. See what a site costs with the website cost calculator.
