Tile calculator: tiles and boxes for a floor or wall

The short answer

Divide the area by the area of one tile, then add waste. A 10 by 8 foot floor is 80 square feet. With 10% waste and 12 by 12 inch tile, that’s 88 tiles, or 9 boxes at 10 square feet each. Allow more for diagonal layouts and lots of cuts: one tile maker recommends at least 20%.

Enter the area, the tile and how much it comes with per box. You’ll get tiles and boxes to buy, and a price if you’re quoting the job.

How it works

Tile area in square feet = length (in) × width (in) ÷ 144. Tiles = area with waste ÷ tile area. Boxes = area with waste ÷ square feet per box, rounded up.

How much extra to order

It depends on the layout, the room and the tile. The calculator starts at 10% as a place to begin. Artistic Tile recommends (opens in a new tab) a minimum of 20% for its products. Keep a few spare for later repairs, because the same lot can be hard to find again.

Common questions

How do I calculate how many tiles I need?
Divide the area by the area of one tile, then add your waste allowance. For 80 square feet with 12 by 12 inch tile and 10% waste, that’s 88 tiles.
How much extra tile should I buy?
Enough for cuts, breakage and later repairs. Diagonal layouts and small rooms with lots of cuts need more. One maker, Artistic Tile, recommends at least 20%.
How many 12 by 24 tiles do I need for 100 square feet?
Each covers 2 square feet, so 50 tiles before waste, or 55 with 10% extra.
Does the grout line change the count?
Slightly: wider joints mean a few fewer tiles. On most rooms it’s smaller than your waste allowance, so this calculator leaves it out.
