Square footage calculator: rooms, feet and inches
The short answer
Multiply length by width in feet. Turn inches into feet first by dividing by 12. A room 12 feet 6 inches by 10 feet is 12.5 × 10, or 125 square feet. For an L-shaped room or a whole house, split it into rectangles and add them up. This calculator keeps a running total across as many areas as you need.
Measure each room or area in feet and inches. You’ll get the total, along with square yards, acres and a price if you charge by the foot.

How it works
Square feet = length (ft) × width (ft). Inches ÷ 12 gives the part of a foot: 6 inches is 0.5, and 9 inches is 0.75.
| Room | Measurements | Square feet |
|---|---|---|
| Bedroom | 12 ft × 10 ft | 120 |
| Living room | 16 ft 6 in × 14 ft | 231 |
| Hallway | 20 ft × 3 ft 6 in | 70 |
Odd shapes
Split the space into rectangles and enter each as its own area. A triangle is half its base × height, and a circle is 3.14 × radius × radius: work those out and add them to your total.
Once you have the area, the paint, flooring and tile calculators tell you what to buy.
