Sod calculator: square feet, rolls and pallets
The short answer
Multiply the lawn’s length and width, then add a little for cuts. A 50 by 40 foot lawn is 2,000 square feet, or 2,100 with 5% extra. That’s 210 of the 10 square foot rolls, or 5 pallets at 500 square feet each. Pallet sizes vary by grower, from 400 to 700 square feet in one grower’s listing.
Enter the lawn and your grower’s roll and pallet sizes. You’ll get what to order, and a price if you’re installing it for a customer.

How it works
Sod to order = length × width × (1 + waste ÷ 100). Divide by roll or pallet size for the count.
| Piece | Size | Pallet |
|---|---|---|
| Slab | 2.66 sq ft | 400 to 500 sq ft |
| Mini roll | 5 sq ft | 400 to 500 sq ft |
| Large roll | 10 sq ft | 500 to 700 sq ft |
Those sizes are from Sod Solutions (opens in a new tab), and growers differ, so ask yours. Order close to the install date, because sod doesn’t keep long on a pallet.
