Bing Places for Business: add your listing, or copy it from Google

The short answer

Bing Places for Business is Microsoft’s free listing for showing up on Bing and its maps. Sign in at bing.com/forbusiness, then either import from your Google Business Profile or search for your business and claim or create it. Verified Google profiles are verified automatically. Otherwise Bing sends a PIN by phone, mail, email or text. Listings typically go live in 7 to 12 days in North America.

It’s free, and if you already have a Google profile, Bing can copy most of it across. It’s one of the quickest listings you’ll do.

The quick way: import from Google

  1. Sign in at bing.com/forbusiness. It takes a Microsoft, Google or Facebook account, or a work account.
  2. Choose to import from your Google Business Profile.
  3. Pick how often it syncs: weekly, every two weeks or monthly.
  4. Sign in to Google, and import the listings it finds.

Bing’s help page (opens in a new tab) says verified Google profiles are verified automatically, then enter publishing. It also warns that you can’t pick individual listings, syncing may create duplicates, and categories may not carry across. Linked listings have to be edited in Google, then synced. If you don’t have a Google profile yet, start there.

The other way: add it by hand

  1. Sign in, and search for your business by name and location.
  2. Claim it if it’s there. If not, choose Create a new business.
  3. Add your details: up to 10 categories, 100 photos and 20 service areas. No PO boxes.
  4. Verify it. Bing says (opens in a new tab) you can get a PIN by phone, mail, email or text, though not everyone gets every option. Phone only works if the listing already has your business number, unedited.

Going to customers rather than having them come to you? Bing lets you hide your address once you add service areas.

How long it takes

  • Publishing: typically 7 to 12 days in North America, and up to two weeks elsewhere.
  • Postcards: Bing says they typically take 5 to 6 business days in the US. Wait at least 12 days before contacting support.
  • Edits: changing a pending listing resets its date, so get it right before you submit.

Keep it fresh. Bing says (opens in a new tab) it may prefer other data sources if you haven’t updated your listing in more than 6 months. Syncing from Google handles this for you.

Do you need the ad credit?

Bing’s page promotes ad credits from Microsoft Advertising when you spend money on ads. They’re optional, and you don’t need them for a listing. Treat it as a separate decision, once your free listings are in order, and get Apple Business done while you’re at it.
