Cubic yard calculator: from feet and inches to yards
The short answer
A cubic yard is 27 cubic feet: 3 feet long, 3 feet wide and 3 feet deep. Multiply length by width by depth in feet and divide by 27. A space 12 feet long, 9 feet wide and 1 foot deep is 108 cubic feet, which is 4 cubic yards. Enter depth in inches and this does the conversion for you.
For anything sold or hauled by the yard: soil, stone, mulch, concrete, debris. Enter the measurements and get cubic yards, plus tons if you know the weight.

How it works
Cubic yards = length (ft) × width (ft) × depth (ft) ÷ 27. If depth is in inches, divide it by 12 first.
| Cubic feet | Cubic yards |
|---|---|
| 27 | 1 |
| 54 | 2 |
| 100 | 3.7 |
| 135 | 5 |
| 270 | 10 |
| 500 | 18.52 |
For material-specific figures and bags, use the concrete, gravel, mulch or topsoil calculators. They use this same math.
