Painting estimate template: rooms, prep, paint and labor

The short answer

A painting estimate lists the rooms or surfaces, prep such as patching and sanding, the paint by name and sheen, the number of coats, labor and the total. Spell out who moves furniture and what you won’t paint. Work out the paint with the calculator, fill in the lines below, and print it or save the PDF.

Spells out the prep and the paint, since those are where one painter’s price differs from another’s.

How it works

What to spell out

  • Prep: what you’ll patch, sand, caulk and prime
  • Paint: brand, line, sheen and number of coats
  • What’s not included: closets, ceilings, moving heavy furniture
  • Older homes: homes built before 1978 may have lead paint, and federal rules can apply to the work

Common questions

What should a painting estimate include?
The rooms or surfaces, prep, paint by name, coats, labor, what’s excluded, how long the price is good for and the total.
How do I estimate a paint job?
Measure the area, estimate hours for prep and coats, add paint and supplies, then overhead and profit. The painting pricing calculator follows those steps.
Should I show labor and materials separately?
Either works. Many painters give one price per room, and name the paint so customers can compare.
Should I take a deposit?
Many do, to cover paint and hold the date. Some states limit deposits on home improvement jobs, so check yours.
Is this template free?
Yes. No sign-up and no watermark. It runs in your browser, so nothing you type is stored or sent to us. Print it or save it as a PDF before you close the page.
