Wix vs Squarespace for a small business: prices and how to decide

The short answer

Wix has a free plan, and paid plans from $17 a month on yearly billing. Squarespace has no free plan on its pricing page, but offers a 14-day trial, with plans from $19 a month paid annually. For a simple small business site either works: compare the plan you’d really need, then count your own hours, since you’re the one building it.

Both can get a small business a good-looking site. The bigger question is who’s going to build and keep it up. Here are the published prices, then how to decide.

Wix says its prices are for yearly subscriptions paid in full, with a 14-day money-back guarantee, and that its plan’s free domain voucher lasts one year. Squarespace says paying annually saves up to 36% and lists a free custom domain with a condition, so read the fine print. Wix’s page showed unusual cents in its prices when we read it, so we’ve rounded them: check the live page. Both change often, and card processing fees are extra if you sell online.

How to decide

  • Spending nothing yet? Wix’s free plan lets you start, though a business should use its own domain, which needs a paid plan.
  • Booking or selling? Check that the plan you’re pricing includes what you need, because entry plans often don’t.
  • Prefer a design that’s hard to break? Try both during a trial or free plan, and see which one you’re happy editing.
  • Moving later? Neither moves easily to the other, so try to choose once.

The cost that isn’t on the pricing page

A builder’s monthly price leaves out the hours you’ll spend building, writing and fixing it. Run your numbers through the website cost calculator. If your hours are better spent on paying work, a done-for-you site may cost less overall, and that’s what CoveDesk’s website service offers. See Services.
